Structural guidelines

When planning for the installation of a roof window, it is important that the structural integrity of the roof is considered fully. Most roofs can be adapted to take roof windows, but some engineered trusses should not be cut without a proven solution.

If you have any doubts about this, we recommend that professional advice is sought before commencing work.

Trimming rafters
It is often necessary to remove a section of timber to accommodate a roof window that is too wide to sit between two rafters. An example of this can be seen in the step-by-step guide.

It is important when trimming rafters to allow enough height to allow the reveals to splay back correctly. Placing the top and bottom trimmers too close to the window is a common mistake in the installation process.
